Water is the most tranquil and turbulent of nature’s forces. Adding a water body, to the scenery not only enhances its beauty, but is also considered an optimal way of balancing the energies of the people living around it. Streams in nature have a system of depletion and renewal of water that works to keep the streams flowing. However, careful planning is needed to maintain artificial streams and Japanese water gardens since they are not endowed with such a system.
Streams generally slow down as the landscape flattens and transform in to pools. Thus, when recreating flowing water bodies, it becomes essential to construct a pond where the stream ends. After the channel and ditch has been dug, the soil needs to be covered with pond and stream liners to prevent erosion and seepage.Since the stream constantly flows in to the pond, a drainage system is needed to prevent the pond from overflowing. However, this method is limited by the water-holding capacity of the soil, and installing a pump or pipe drainage system, is a more permanent solution.
Pond and stream liners are sheets of bio-friendly plastic or rubber. Also called geo-plastics, these sheets are water resistance and are used to prevent loss of water in to porous soil. Some types of hardwood are less susceptible to water seepage and can be used without barrel pond liners for considerable periods. Within the vicinity of the garden you can create a tranquil play area for the kids with an outdoor sandbox.
